Learning together with the next generation of environmental decision-makers
by Geoff Park
Natural Decisions has a strong commitment to improving environmental decision-making through delivery of education activities in a number of University programs. This includes teaching at graduate and post-graduate levels at the University of Western Australia and Melbourne University, in a number of courses, across economics, restoration ecology and catchment management. I’ve recently completed two days of very rewarding involvement in the Masters program at University of Melbourne, Creswick, teaching students in a subject entitled ‘Ecological Restoration’.
This subject has an element that focuses on goal setting in environmental management, an area of great interest to us. I was involved in delivering a lecture on goal setting to support evidence-based investment, together with a series of outdoor, field-based activities where some of the principles we discussed were examined in practice. It was terrific to see the enthusiasm and knowledge of the students, who came together from a wide range of backgrounds and disciplines to tackle the subject. Their insightful questioning gives me great hope for the future of environmental management!
